   I already have Lindsay Alder’s book posing these cue cards are going to be really useful to take on a live shoot as they are not bulky and will help me to explain to a model what I am trying to atchieve, I can somtimes get tongue-tied

   If you are a photographer that does boudoir imagery, or would like to, this ‘deck’ of poses is a must. Ms. Adler not only shows you the body positioning but talks about the lenses to use, aperture, shutter speed focal length, iso, and most important camera angle. I actually went back to some of my best boudoir images and checked my camera settings….and happily they were in the range of Ms. Adler’s recommendations. These cards are easy to carry with you equipment and are a very professional method to show your models. I highly recommend them.

   A posing deck! What a fun and creative concept. And one of the leading sentences early in the deck made me happy: all of the light used was natural light. So much easier than flash. The first card also gives three major tips that I will be happy to have an any portrait situation. For example, that whatever is closer to the camera will appear larger so be aware of your posing. I have read this author’s previous book, “The Photographers’Guide to Posing”, and found it quite useful. It’s a manual I will be using for a long time. Thus, I am eager to read this clever deck of cards.

   The table of contents is brilliant; it lists every pose described so that, when you have an image in mind, you can easily locate where, in the deck of cards, it is.

   The author gives explicit directions to models so that a particular feeling is expressed in the pose. How very clever: The models could be handed a card so that she could execute the right moves. This collection is, of course, individual cards each with a pose, directions, and camera settings. Great concept and I’m guessing quite effective. A bonus is that the model/customer can much more easily shuffle through the cards to find a pose they like than go through an entire book of photos. I enjoyed the feel of going through the cards, and the ability to focus on just the one card in my hands.

   Despite the nature of the photography here, I did not find the subject matter offensive or pornographic in the least. The images are done in a classy, professional way. The author clearly means to help us. She gives instructions as particular as to have the model put her chin down, connecting with her shoulder. Leaves nothing to guesswork which gives a photog more confidence.

   A major point in the Adler’s favor is that she gives the settings, including the camera angle, in each photograph. That’s great, because what I do not want in a how-to manual is mystery:)

   This deck of cards is a brilliant take on portrait photography: physically pleasing to hold and run through, and full of precisely the info the photog AND the model need to do their respective jobs. I’ll be showing this deck off to my friends!

   The Boudoir Posing Deck- 50 Poses for Photographers and Models is a perfect tool for the boudoir photographer. This set of 4.5 x 6” cards features 50 varied poses that illustrate the most flattering and enhancing posing found in this genre of photography. Shot in a single hotel room with a single model and only a few wardrobe changes, Adler maintains the subject matter of only posing without the distractions of varied lighting, lingerie differences and varying models. The result is a directed study of posing techniques that are easy to use as templates for looks or starting points for varied positioning.

   Each card features a full-size image on one side with the second side featuring a small version of the shot, a written description of the pose, and camera info that includes the lens, aperture setting, shutter speed, ISO and camera angle. The camera settings change very little, so there’s not a lot to learn here.

   It’s important to note what this set is not- it is not a tool to learn how to light, shoot or post-process boudoir images. On the deck’s first card, Adler acknowledges that all images were shot in a single hotel room with large windows. There is no lighting applied except for the use of some reflected light to fill in shadows. The result in very natural looking, albeit simple, lighting- there is no hair light, no amber rim light, etc. So the look of these images is not what one usually sees in glamour magazines or lingerie catalogs- this is simple boudoir lighting. There is also no mention of shooting techniques; in fact, the cards reveal that her aperture is almost always around f/2.2 and, surprisingly, her ISO is nearly always at 2500. This is peculiar, especially when there are times that her shutter speed reaches 1/8000”- she’s undoubtedly using a camera with a high-end sensor, but there’s no reason to be shooting at those shutter speeds when even the best of sensors will benefit from a reduced ISO.

   But keeping in mind that this is only a posing deck, these can be an invaluable resource for the boudoir photographer, especially when shooting with a model lacking background in this genre. Browsing through the deck enables a model to select poses and looks that she likes without the uncomfortable and awkward trial-and-error workflow that plagues the inexperienced. This is a useful addition to the camera bag of the boudoir photographer.
