We are an independent publisher based in San Rafael, CA, that has traditionally focused on publishing world-class books to help photographers master the art, craft, and technology of photography. We have grown a lot in the last few years, and we are expanding our publishing vision to include all creative topics. These include graphic design, painting, drawing, typography, crafting, and much more. Rocky Nook is a close-knit team who believes in doing great work while maintaining a strong work/life balance. We are looking for someone to join us and help take our publishing to the next level.

Here are some of the responsibilities, skills, and qualities the ideal candidate will have:

Project Management

• Guide 3–4 projects through the publishing process, working collaboratively with other departments in-house and our outside freelance team to produce a timely, successful, innovative list
• Cultivate relationships with agents, authors, artists, licensors, designers, overseas publishers, and packagers to develop the best possible project
• Write jacket copy, flap copy, sales notes, and fact sheets

Acquisitions

• Assists in the acquisitions process by performing research on sales numbers and competitive titles, and evaluating book proposals

• Research and acquire 1–2 books per year
• Stay on top of marketplace trends and determine how best to publish to the end consumer

 Editorial

• Coordinate and maintain Rocky Nook’s metadata process
• Coordinate and manage Rocky Nook’s three seasonal lists to ensure covers, descriptions, etc. are ready for each sales presentation and launch
• Assist with contracts for new titles and foreign rights
• Create and maintain assets for each title
• Manage other editorial topics and information both internally and externally (such as: inputting eBook pricing, setting up eBooks for preorder, distribution of metadata, title status, dates and specs for books)

We were founded 10 years ago in Santa Barbara, California, with the mission to provide the world’s best educational books for photographers and . We publish books on the art, craft, and technology of photography, and we’re fortunate to work with some of the best authors and photographers in the world. We have published over 200 books, with between 35-45 new books being published every year.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary dependent on experience. Rocky Nook offers a full range of benefits, including health, dental, flex-spending, and retirement. Rocky Nook offers a flexible schedule and work-from-home options but requires this position to be in our San Rafael office a minimum of 3 days per week.
