Marketing Manager
Right after launching a marketing campaign, do you hit the refresh button on your browser every 10 minutes to check the results? Do you love books? Photography, drawing, or other creative hobbies? Being part of a small but mighty team? If so, we would love to speak with you about an opportunity to join the Rocky Nook team to help us take our marketing efforts to the next level.
We are an independent book publisher based in San Rafael, CA (just outside San Francisco). We publish world-class books that help creative people master the art, craft, and technology of their hobby or profession. We are a close-knit team that believes in doing great work together while maintaining a strong work/life balance.
Being a small company, we know the value that each person can and must bring to the table. Overall, we are looking for someone proactive and fun to work with, who takes their job seriously but not too seriously. Someone who would be happy and comfortable talking with a high-profile National Geographic photographer about their book one minute, and rolling up their sleeves to help pack up a tradeshow booth the next minute. We are looking for a self-starter who can solve problems on their own but also works well as part of a team.
In short, we’re more interested in finding the right fit than in finding someone who checks off every box below. That said, being passionate about digital marketing is a must. Here are some of the main responsibilities the ideal candidate will have:
MARKETING STRATEGY
- Work closely with management, editorial teams, and authors to develop and execute innovative marketing strategies for each product and the company as a whole.
DIGITAL MARKETING
- Test, learn, and iterate on our online campaigns to continuously improve performance and deliver better results.
- Craft captivating and engaging content to guide potential customers through each stage of the marketing funnel.
- Create personalized experiences that resonate with our target audience at every touchpoint.
- Manage and optimize WordPress website content to drive traffic, engagement, and conversions.
- Be the friendly voice behind our emails, collateral, and other direct marketing materials, making sure every communication feels like a conversation with a friend.
- Dive into the data to understand our customers’ needs and preferences, then use those insight to tailor our messaging and offers accordingly.
- Drive list-building efforts to continuously grow and expand our direct audience.
- Take the lead on our pay-per-click (PPC) advertising strategy and execution (Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Amazon Ads).
- Above all, bring a positive attitude and a passion for building meaningful connections with our audience through direct marketing.
SOCIAL MEDIA & PR
- Be the voice of our brand across social media platforms, engaging with our community in a friendly and authentic manner.
- Develop and execute creative social media campaigns that resonate with our audience and drive engagement.
- Cultivate relationships with influencers, media outlets, and other partners to amplify our brand message and reach new audiences.
- Monitor social media channels and PR mentions, responding promptly and thoughtfully to comments, messages, and inquiries.
- Proactively identify and pitch media opportunities to increase brand visibility and coverage.
TRADESHOWS
- Coordinate logistics and manage all aspects of our presence at tradeshows, from booth setup to teardown.
GENERAL MARKETING
- Copy writing: Create copy for web, sales enablement, and social media channels.
- Coordinate co-marketing opportunities (giveaways, excerpts, contests, campaigns, etc.) with industry partners and authors.
- Provide our global distributors and sales teams with marketing materials.
- Interact with people at all levels of an organization, fostering strong cross-functional teamwork and results.
And here are the basic skills the ideal candidate will possess:
- Basic proficiency with visual design concepts and software, such as Photoshop and Canva
- Proficiency in Office for Mac (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Basic experience with HTML and CSS a plus
- Must be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and possess the ability to organize and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Strong analytical skills (Google Analytics)
- Familiarity with key social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok)
- At least 2 years of experience working with WordPress websites
- At least 2 years of digital media marketing experience
