HOW TO DOWNLOAD AN EBOOK

Rocky Nook’s eBooks can be read on most eBook readers as well as on your computer.

KINDLE – How to Download

The MOBI file format has been optimized for Amazon’s line of Kindle readers, including both the Kindle Fire and the eInk versions (Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, and Kindle DX). All eBooks on our website are available in MOBI format. If you prefer a PDF version of an eBook, you can also read them on most Kindles.

  • A Note About Formats:
Since the MOBI format is Kindle native, you can change font options (including size), make notes, and highlight text. PDFs, however, are faithful representations of the print book, therefore you cannot adjust the font sizes or make notes when reading PDFs on a Kindle.

There are two ways to get an eBook purchased from our website onto your Kindle:

You can easily transfer the MOBI file or watermarked PDF to your Kindle via USB. You’ll learn how to do this in the “Transferring the eBook to Your Kindle via USB” section below.
Using Amazon’s Kindle Personal Documents Service, you can email either MOBI or PDF files to your Kindle (some fees many apply). You’ll learn how to do this in the “Using the Kindle Personal Documents Service” section below.
This guide will assist you in loading your eBooks to your Kindle using both of the above methods after purchase.

Transferring the eBook to Your Kindle via USB:

Once you’ve downloaded the MOBI or PDF file to your computer, it is simple to get it onto either your eInk Kindle or Kindle Fire using the following steps:

Locate the USB cable that came with your Kindle. Plug one end into your Kindle and the other into a USB port on your computer.

Your Kindle enters into USB Drive mode. A drive labeled “KINDLE” will appear on your computer (on Windows it’ll be in “My Computer,” and on OS X it will appear under “Devices”).

Clicking on the KINDLE drive on Windows will reveal a window like this:

The new KINDLE drive as seen in My Computer on a Windows computer

On OS X you’ll see this:

The open KINDLE drive as found on the OS X desktop

Find the MOBI or PDF files that you downloaded and copy or move the file to the “Documents” folder on the KINDLE drive on your computer.

Follow your operating system’s proper procedure for safely removing hardware/ejecting the KINDLE drive, and unplug your Kindle from your computer.

Your books are now in your Books library on your Kindle Fire (PDFs are stored in the “Docs” library) or the home screen on your eInk Kindle.

Note that transferring an eBook to your Kindle via USB saves the file directly to that particular device only. If you have multiple Kindles, or use the Kindle app on your smartphone or tablet computer in addition to a physical Kindle, eBooks transferred via USB will not be available across all of your devices without repeating the transfer process for each device.

Transferring the eBook Using Amazon’s Kindle Personal Documents Service

Amazon’s Kindle Personal Documents Service allows you to email an eBook to your Kindle (via the Send-to-Kindle email address), making your eBook available on all your Kindles. Any file sent to your Kindle using this service will also sync your current location, notes, and highlights across Kindles.

  • Note:
Amazon offers this service for free only when the personal documents are delivered to your device via WiFi. If you have an eInk Kindle that uses Amazon’s Whispernet 3G service and is not connected to a WiFi network, you might be charged for the document delivery. See Amazon’s website for their list of fees.

To transfer eBooks to your Kindle(s) using the Kindle Personal Documents Service, follow these steps:

First you have to authorize an email address from which your Kindle can receive documents. On Amazon’s website, go to the Settings>Personal Document Settings section of the Manage Your Content and Devices page to view or manage your Approved Personal Document email address (consult Amazon’s documentation for the exact directions).

Create an email message from your authorized email address and attach the MOBI or PDF file files that you downloaded from your recent purchase.

Send the email to your Kindle’s email address. (You’ll find this email address on the Manage Your Kindle page by clicking on “Manage your Devices” in the “Your Kindle Account” section. Each of your Kindles will be listed along with their associated email address.)
When you next connect your Kindle to a WiFi network, your eBook will appear either on the home screen (eInk Kindles) or your Docs library (Kindle Fire).

Your book appears in the Books Library on your Kindle Fire, as seen here, or your eInk Kindle’s home screen

The emailed eBook is also stored in Amazon’s cloud, which makes it available in the Archive folder on an eInk Kindle and the Cloud section of the Docs library on a Kindle Fire (and the various Kindle apps for smartphones, tablets, and computers).

PDF — How To Download

PDF (Portable Document Format), is the most universal eBook file format, as it can be viewed on virtually any device.

PDF eBooks are exact replicas of the original printed page. They include hypertext links to other sections of the book or to sites on the web. Often PDF eBooks include a hyperlinked index and table of contents; click on any entry to go directly to that page in the book.

After completing the purchase process, the PDF file is available on your Downloads page for downloading to your computer’s hard drive.

Please note that it may take a few minutes for your PDF to be generated. Please allow 3 to 5 minutes before attempting to download your PDF file. Thank you!

To view a PDF file, you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader program installed on your computer. If you do not already have this program installed, you may download it for free from this URL: http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/

To read a PDF eBook, launch Adobe Acrobat Reader and select File>Open. When the Open dialog box appears, navigate to and select the eBook file, then click the Open button. The eBook now appears in the Adobe Reader window.

You are now ready to read your eBook.

iPAD, iPHONE — How To Download

Our eBooks can be read on Apple’s iPad and iPhone portable devices. To do so, you must use the ePub or PDF file format and install iBooks or another eReader application on your device.

Installing iBooks on Your iPad or iPhone

There are several eReader applications available for the iPad and iPhone, but the most popular is iBooks. This is a free application developed by Apple for use on its iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch devices.

iBooks can read eBooks in either the ePub and PDF file formats. We suggest using the ePub file format for iBooks, as this allows for easy scrolling from page to page on the device’s screen.

To download iBooks to your device, go to the Apple App Store and search for “iBooks.” Follow the onscreen instructions to install the free application.

Downloading an eBook to your iPad or iPhone

To Transfer from Desktop/Laptop to Mobile Device follow these steps:

Step 1 – Download either the ePub or PDF file to your desktop.

Step 2  – Open the iBooks application.

Step 3 – Copy the file you downloaded by dragging and dropping it into the iBooks application.

Step 4 – Connect your iPad or iPhone to your computer.

Step 5 – Open iTunes and from the Library tab, click on your device.

Step 6 – Click on the Books menu and then select the book you would like to upload.

Step 7 – Select Sync in the bottom right of the iTunes sync.

Step 8 – Once the Sync is complete, disconnect the device from the computer and open the iBooks app. Your new book should be there waiting for you!

Direct Download: To download your eBook directly to your iPhone/iPad open the order confirmtion email on the device and click on the ePub download link. Once this link downloads completely, click on the “open in iBooks” button at the top-right corner of the screen. From there you will be re-directed to iBooks where the eBook should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, manually open iBooks and there you will find the new title.

NOOK — How To Download an eBook

Use the ePUB or PDF file types on your NOOK reader.

Easy Download Instructions:

Step 1: Connect your Nook to the computer with its USB cable.

Step 2: Open “My Computer”, choose “Removable Disk”, open the “My Document” folder.

Step 3: Drag the e-book from computer hard drive, and drop it in the “My Documents” folder in the Nook drive folder.

Step 4: Un-plug the USB cable, Turn on your Nook, find the book in the “My Documents” folder. Or you can also do a search job for the book title.

Still Having Trouble?

Windows users: When you first connect your NOOK to your personal computer, Windows will update the device drivers; from then on your NOOK HD will appear as a media (MTP) device and will be listed by its model number, “BNTV600”. Once the drivers are updated, Windows will prompt you to choose how to treat the device; choose “Open Device to View Files using Windows Explorer.” NOOK will appear as a new Portable Media Player device named BNTV600 on your personal computer.

Mac users:When you first connect your NOOK to your Mac, you will see a “NOOK” device on your desktop. From there, run “MyNOOK Setup” from the provided link, which is a one-time installation. “MyNOOK Setup” allows for your device to appear on your Mac as a removable drive called “MyNOOK” for you to transfer your personal files.

To organize the files, open the BNTV600 / Internal Storage folder (Windows) or the “MyNOOK” device (Mac). You’ll see several folders on your NOOK. Copy or move your personal files into the My Files folder. (If you have an SD Card installed in your NOOK, you will also see a folder called “SD Card” with the same folder structure inside. You can copy or move files here to store them on the SD Card.) Within the folder, you can sort files into these folders:

  • Books
  • Documents
  • Magazines
  • Music
  • Newspapers
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • Wallpapers
  • NOOK Kids Recordings

Other Nook eBook Download Methods

Library eBooks are supported natively on NOOK HD and HD+ through OverDrive and the 3M Cloud Library. These third-party applications are free in the NOOK store, and don’t require side-loading; using them allows you to download your books directly to your device.

Adobe Digital Editions for Windows does not currently support MTP Media devices, like NOOK HD and HD+. You can use ADE to unlock protected (DRM) files, but you must manually copy them to your NOOK as described above. (Mac users can use ADE to directly transfer books after the one-time installation of the MyNOOK Setup drivers.) When you have finished arranging files, simply disconnect the NOOK cable (Windows) or eject the MyNOOK icon by dragging it to the trash (Mac)

Calibre is a free software and supports almost all the major e-readers and tablets on the market. Begin by downloading and installing Calibre, and then launch Calibre. Click the “Add books” and browse the directory to which you downloaded your eBook files (EPUB and/or PDF). The files will appear in list view in the main window (Library). Connect your eReader device to your PC via USB cable. To transfer the new files to your eReader, highlight the files you wish to have on your eReader and click the “Send to device” button at the top of the window and select your device.

Can I Share My eBook Files?

When you purchase an eBook, that copy is designed for your own personal use. While you can copy an eBook file for use on another device you own, such as a portable eReader or smartphone, you may not share copies with other people. You also may not sell used eBooks; ownership is yours only, and cannot be transferred.
