This book is not a replacement for the manual. The manual is an invaluable resource to learn what your camera is capable of. This book takes those capabilities and teaches you how to apply them to your photography, and enhance your photographic vision with your high-tech tools. It’s a great resource for anyone who wants to go to the next level with their X-T3. And if you bought this camera, I’m pretty sure you want to take advantage of these tips to make your investment pay dividends. Highly recommended.

  2. Rico Pfirstinger’s X-Pert Tips series for Fujifilm Cameras have much in common. First, they are written not for the photography novice, nor for the photographer picking up their first Fujifilm camera; rather, Pfirstinger picks up where the manual and basic camera familiarity leaves off. His first chapter opens assuring the reader that reading the manual is the starting point, and this book will be the enhancement. I think it’s more accurate to say that the manual explains how to do things with the camera, where Pfirstinger explains the logic behind the how, why this is a best practice and then when to apply the settings and techniques. Suffice it to say that Pfirstinger’s The Fujifilm X-T3, 150 X-Pert Tips is a beyond-the-manual book.

The 150 tips are arranged by subject headings including XT-3 Basics, Monitor and Viewfinder, Focusing, White Balance and File Parameters, Video, Flash, Adapted Lenses and Wireless Control. Within each section are brief summaries that can be practical or fairly technical- wither way, you develop a greater understanding of the XT-3 and photography in general.

Many of the tips explain simple and rarely used skills/decisions- like how to find the firmware version number, being sure to always use Slot 1 for upgrading firmware, choosing the best SD Card, and best methods of cleaning the camera. These activities aren’t done often, so forgetting how (or even when) to do them is common enough, and the book gives clear explanations to help keep the camera in excellent shape.

Pfirstinger clearly understands and loves the Fujifilm system, but the book doesn’t lead like a fan-boys exaltation of the camera. He cites problems with negative aspects of the camera as appropriate; e.g., explaining that the Fujifilm lenses that are not cine-specific cause brightness jumps when making aperture changes while shooting video. Shortcomings of the camera are identified and solutions, when they exist, explained.

Pfirstinger’s The Fujifilm X-T3, 150 X-Pert Tips provides all the information required to not learn, but to polish your use of the XT-3.
